Blue Heron
acrylic/colored pencil on 12″x 12″ stretched canvas

Last week I had the opportunity to take part in an Encaustic workshop with artists Jeffrey Hirst and Lisa Pressman, at Jeff’s studio in Chicago.
It is a fascinating process, but in 5 days I was primarily consumed with trying to master the process/techniques of working with hot wax. I made some progress, but have a LONG, LONG way to go. The following are in progress experiments which I hope to complete this Fall (once I set up an area of my own studio where I can work with the encaustic materials). Each piece is 12″ x 12″.

Lakeshore Variations
For these pieces, I began with a pen and ink drawing of trees on the shore of Lake Superior. I had the drawing reproduced, then cut, pasted, drew on, and reconfigured the elements to create new compositions on 5″x 7″ boards. Very fun and very relaxing. These are just a few of the ones I have completed thus far, with plans to do more, as each one suggests ideas for another.
